The Covid necessity of staging virtual rather than in-person conferences has revealed the wider international reach of the online format. This is certainly how UK charity, the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) sees it.

It’s ‘carry on online’ for the British Tinnitus Association, whose 2021 conference will be digital

The BTA is the UK’s biggest tinnitus body, and in 2021 it will stick to virtual after the success the format brought it in 2020. The BTA’s 2021 annual conference will take place online from October 4 to 8, 2021.

Aimed at audiologists, ENTs, GPs, hearing care professionals, psychologists, tinnitus support groups, and researchers, the online event will offer attendees full access to five days of lectures, cases studies, and seminars. Each day will bring a different theme, including the psychology of tinnitus, practical skills, and the latest in tinnitus research. Topics will range from paediatric tinnitus, PTSD management and tinnitus, and the impact of tinnitus on professional musicians.

International reach

Maisie Carscadden, Events Manager at the BTA said: "After reviewing feedback from our 2020 conference, it was clear that attendees approved our decision to run our annual conference virtually. We reached a wider audience than previous years due to accessibility, with a total of 27 countries represented in 2020.˝

˝As well as international attendees, our virtual conference also provided the BTA with the opportunity to secure international speakers which would not have been possible in previous years," added Carscadden.

"The format of the Virtual BTA Conference allows flexibility for the attendees. We appreciate that people have adapted their way of working, with some still not returning their place of work,˝ she added.

Tickets for the 2021 will be released in July. There will be an early bird rate of £90 for the first 50 attendees, with standard rate tickets costing £120 each. Tickets include access to all recorded conference material for 12 months after the event. For full details, visit the special BTA conference web page.

Hybrid future event

The perceived benefits of the virtual format mean the BTA is not looking at a return to a 100% physical event, even after the pandemic. Virtual elements will still be part of the show.

We are very much looking forward to returning to physical events in 2022, however we will be exploring a hybrid approach to cater to our international audience," said BTA Events Manager, Maisie Carscadden
