The status of audiology in Spain has made a giant leap forward with the announcement by the University of Salamanca that it will offer the country's first ever degree course in the subject.
In what has been hailed as "news of the century" in the Spanish hearing healthcare sphere, the announcement of a degree in audiology came during the 13th International Audiology Conference, held at what is the oldest university in the Hispanic world. The news was imparted by vice-rector in Teaching and Quality Assessment, Izaskum Álvarez.
The details of the course have yet to be divulged, but the University plans to commence the new degree subject in the next two years.
The audiology conference days attracted around one hundred delegates from Spain and Latin America for a scientific programme of presentations covering questions such as the correct performance of otoacoustic emissions and auditory evoked potentials, accurate patient profiling for personalising rehab, cochlear implant improvements, and the use and potentital of the mobile phone in teleaudiology, among other matters.
