Issue 53 reports on the efforts being made by governments and private firms in Argentina, Peru, and Costa Rica to give a definitive boost to newborn hearing screening
which, although enshrined in law for some time, is still not implemented in all cities with the same rigour; this year, however, has brought specific actions to guarantee early diagnosis, while investment has risen. We publish the testimonies of those on the front line in reinforcing these changes. Meanwhile, Chile and Mexico are focused on cochlear implant therapy. In the former, Phonak is sharing its experience in the development of integrated hearing centres in the country’s main towns and cities, and we report on how the use of implants has increased for all ages. Mexico is running a campaign to promote different government institutions, together with multinational firm Advanced Bionics, in fitting under-fives in remote areas. So far, in two campaigns, 48 children have received their devices.
Finally, we cover Colombian research that warns of the danger of noise on the capital city’s biggest transport system, revealing the risks currently facing users. All this is in Audio Infos, Latin America no. 53.
