What do you know about the history of HIMSA, the company behind the widely used Noah software and standard?
With 35,000 audiologists in over 100 countries using either Noah ES, Noah System or a Noah compatible business system, there should be no shortage of curiosity about the outfit behind this software.
HIMSA, the Hearing Instrument Manufacturers’ Software Association, came together in 1993 as a collaboration between GN Danavox (now GN Resound), Oticon, Phonak and Widex. The Noah software standard is now backed by over 130 companies that have joined the alliance over the years.
History of HIMSA and the Noah Standard 1993 – 2023
There is now a page on the HIMSA website that charts the history of the organisation, and it presents some very interesting details, such as:
- HIMSA has only 20 employees in its Denmark and US bases, and they spend their time testing and developing software.
- Noah is not an acronym, but many people ask HIMSA what the letters N-O-A-H might mean. “Unfortunately,” says the outfit’s MD Arild Rasmussen, “we need to disappoint them. The name Noah was chosen based on the story of Noah and the ark. Like Noah’s ark, Noah has brought the hearing care industry together under a single software standard.”
- By November 1996, more than one in four audiologists were already using Noah software for their daily hearing tasks.
