Failings in NHS audiology services have meant children, diagnosed too late and left untreated, suffering life-changing consequences through, including developmental delays in their communication, learning and social skills. The failings were supposed to have been redressed but they have not been.

Two years on from urgent recommendations to improve "multiple systemic problems" in NHS Scotland's hearing services for both children and adults, referral waiting times continue to be unacceptably long, while failures in diagnosis, treatment, and support are still impacting the lives of children. The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) says it has information on cases in which children who should be seen within 42 days were waiting up to 600 days, posing a serious risk to early identification and intervention.
