EVENT
The International Tinnitus Seminar takes place every three to four years and this year was back in Germany for the first time in more than 20 years. The event was hosted at the Campus Charité Mitte in Berlin last May.

“What struck me most, just like in Valencia and Bruges during the last venues, was the heterogeneity of the approaches which were presented”, says Dr. Berthold Langguth. He is head of the Tinnitus Center of Regensburg University and one of the speakers at the 8th Tinnitus Research Initiative International Conference, which took place last March in Auckland, New Zealand.

Whilst still the largest gathering of hearing care professionals and industry representatives, AudiologyNOW! 2014 had fewer exhibitors than previous years, and those that were exhibiting had smaller booths. Connectivity was this year’s buzz; some manufacturers were talking about ‘Made for iPhone’ (MFi), others were interested in ‘made for all phones’! There were several different approaches on display.

Recently the insight has grown that rehabilitation of audibility in children does not lead to the same level of comprehension of speech as it does in adults. This goes especially for noisy situations. The adult’s brain processes are better capable of filling in gaps in audibility. This is an important fact for auditory training of children with hearing aids, ARC program lecturer Jessica Sullivan Ph.D. underlines. “Comprehension of speech in hearing impaired children is my motivation.”

Starkey Hearing Technologies returned to Las Vegas for the 2nd Hearing Innovations Expo from 15th to 19th January. The American manufacturer was joined by 3,400 audiologists from across the world for three days of talks based on the theme “Tomorrow starts today.”

For its 10th anniversary event, in November 2013, the British Academy of Audiology returned to its inaugural venue – Manchester – for the largest annual gathering of UK audiologists. Hundreds of audiologists, scientists, hearing aid dispensers, students and assistant audiologists arrived for the welcoming address from BAA President Adam Beckman.
