Things are very difficult in Chile for any family bringing up a child with a hearing disability. In 2001, the Escúchame (Listen to Me) Foundation was set up with the aim of supporting rehabilitation for children with hearing disabilities who are born into underprivileged families.
The aim of the organisation is to aid the integration of children into the normal schooling system and, as a consequence, into higher education and genuine employment opportunities. In order to empower children who have received help, Escúchame created the Brigada Escucha (Listen Brigade), an outfit comprising deaf children who seek support for other children with the same disability.
