The winner of the 2013 Oticon Focus on People Award is Sergeant Joe Molinari of the Nashua Police Department, New Hampshire, USA. Only eight years into his career, Sgt. Molinari suffered sudden and significant hearing loss in both ears. Molinari says that addressing his hearing loss by patiently and systematically trying out different hearing aid solutions made an immediate difference to his performance at work.

According to Oticon, he was “determined to show that addressing his hearing loss would strengthen his ability to serve the community and his fellow officers ... in a profession where physical and emotional strength is respected and necessary.” Molinari found new confidence on the job and “his willingness to stand up to hearing loss is already changing perceptions of what it means to have hearing loss”, Oticon stated when presenting the award.

Oticon runs the Focus on People Awards program to honor hearing impaired students, adults and advocacy volunteers who have shown that hearing loss does not limit a person's ability to succeed. People from across the United States cast more than 10,000 votes to determine first, second and third place winners.
